Mobile applications (apps) have become an indispensable resource in various settings, increasing availability and accessibility for personal safety tools designed for smartphones. Such tools, sometimes known as "app panic buttons", have been demonstrated to effectively prevent or reduce incidents of violence against individuals and groups - yet their development often occurs only in high-income countries without taking into account needs of low-income communities who are more prone to experiencing violence.
As violence becomes an increasing part of daily life, its solution must involve multiple levels of society with coordinated prevention and intervention strategies. With technology shaping daily life increasingly, app developers are increasingly producing apps designed to aid personal safety as well as address other social concerns like sexism, love myths, ambivalence toward men, depression etc.
lone worker app Even though apps offer many promises of individual safety, little is known about their usage or effects; to address this knowledge gap, a literature review was conducted of freely available smartphone apps in the UK that are advertised as increasing personal safety or preventing interpersonal violence; this paper presents its results and suggests ways to enhance app use, user satisfaction and effectiveness.
Apps designed as personal safety tools typically feature location tracking, alarm services and evidence recording features. A review of the UK app market suggests that many such apps are freely available and that many people find them useful; however, reviewers have expressed some concern about accuracy and reliability issues with some apps; they can interfere with other functions on phones or even violate users' privacy without their knowledge.
Few studies have evaluated the efficacy of apps designed for at-risk children and youth. Evaluations have varied widely in design and scope; most utilize short-term self-report measures to assess app effects. Of those studies that assessed effectiveness, six reported positive results with statistically significant decreases in drunkenness frequency, sexism, ambivalence toward men, love myths bullying victimization or anxiety reduction.
This scoping review highlights the significance of engaging young people as collaborators in developing and evaluating app-based interventions that aim to increase their safety. Man Down Devices As such, these apps will meet the specific needs of this population, and be effective in their intended purpose. Man Down Devices Specifically, this involves making sure app information is regularly updated to include useful resources, and that youth are actively engaged in co-design processes in order to foster long-term use and increased user engagement with this type of app. Future research should also concentrate on increasing access to effective personal safety apps for youth in LMICs, conducting longitudinal studies and using objective outcome measures like reports of victimization to authorities as well as pre/post professional psychological assessments of risk for self-harm or suicide.
