13.  According to the Daily Dot, survivor Ann On started a GoFundMe page to raise $1,433 toward paying off her hospital bills from when she was raped. Even though federal law prohibits hospitals from billing rape victims for things like a rape kit, hospitals do charge for treating other injuries sustained as the result of an attack, the Daily Dot reports.

The most important thing to know is that you have choices. It’s your choice whether or not you report your attack (there are plenty of reasons why people choose to report or not to report, and each of them are valid), and whether or not you go to the hospital. Bills should not be a deterrent to making sure you aren’t in physical danger after an attack, which is why that federal law exists.
